Everything You Need to Know about Stainless Steel Pots and Pans

Stainless steel pots and pans are a very common sight in any kitchen. People like to use stainless steel because it looks good, it doesn’t rust, and it’s a generally safe material for making cookware. It doesn’t have to be all that expensive, as well – you can easily find affordable sets of stainless steel pots and pans, even though there are models that will set you back quite a lot. And it’s readily available from a variety of stores, including online stores like Thaynards. But how good is stainless steel really? It has a great reputation, but is it all true?

The “stainless” in stainless steel is what makes it such a coveted material for a variety of uses. From surgical instruments to coffee pots, stainless steel is used because it doesn’t rust, and it owes this property to chromium. Chromium is metal which, in contact with air, forms an oxide which is not active like iron oxide – or rust. Chromium oxide forms a film over stainless steel object, and this film prevents forming of stains or rust.

Another very important trait stainless steel cookware has is the fact that it doesn’t leach any of the materials into the food. There are two implications to this – one, the food’s taste will not be altered while cooking. And the second and the more important one, the food will not contain materials that are found in the cookware and are bad for your health. Recently, there’s been a lot of talk about other materials used for cookware, like aluminum, which do leach some of their materials into the food and that’s not healthy.

Stainless steel, however, comes with a couple of drawbacks, the biggest of which is the fact that it doesn’t conduct heat all that good. And because the main method of cookware doing the thing it was made for is heat conduction, stainless steel’s week conductive properties are a real problem for stainless steel cookware. If the pan can’t heat up evenly, which is what might happen with stainless steel pans, they can’t cook the food in them evenly. Still, there’s a way to fix stainless steel’s conductivity issue, and it’s usually done by adding a layer of a better conducting between two layers of stainless steel, especially on the bottom of the pan or the pot. The materials used for the purpose are metals like copper or aluminum.

Although stainless steel usually doesn’t leach any of its components into the food, some nickel might get transferred from the cookware. This happens either when using very cheap and low quality stainless steel cookware, or when it’s been damaged by frequent use of abrasives like steel wool for cleaning. So, in order to avoid having undesired nickel in your food, you should make sure that you don’t buy the cheapest stainless steel cookware set out there because it will be of lower quality. Also, try not to use abrasives each and every time when cleaning cookware. If you manage to do that, you’ll have pots and pans that will serve you for a long time and help you prepare many delicious meals.
